El hombrecillo / The Little Man
Parece
A Leonardo
algo ebrio y puso a sonar Don’t let them
erase my name.
Leonardo
llamó a Lúa.
firmas. No había nadie en cola. No podía creérselo.
Lúa no sabe bien cómo pasó. Seguramente ellos tampoco. Teo
raíz, no plantéis nunca! ¡No sembréis, horadad!
Forcejean.
She seems unhinged, but she only seems unhinged. She feels a
little scared, that's all. After all, the music of the spheres is just a
theory. It took a while for Lua to understand. Too many classic films, too much
past in the present made her up. So did too much mythification. Whenever she
realised that she tended to enthroned someone, she evoked that Moreliana from
Rayuela: -But Celia defecates. With her, I put all beings as what they were.
She had few friends, sometimes not even herself. Possibly because she
questioned everything. She found it ridiculous to see people asking for
autographs and photos with artists. Not because she didn't like art. Her
criticism started after a dinner with friends. They started talking about an
actor from the big movie catwalks. Leonardo didn't like him at all. One by one,
he picked apart his latest performances. He did some amateur theatre and had
seen a documentary on the history of theatre that always promised to lend but
no one could ever see. He got up a bit drunk and played Don't let them erase my
name. That song, in the film, opens the dialogue between the actor and the
divine Julia Ginger. Leonardo kneels down and histrionically dramatises the
character about to cry in front of her. He bursts into infectious laughter that
reaches everyone. Lúa didn't like the film either.
Spring went by as time goes by when you grow up, like an
animated coyote.
Leonardo called Lúa. Lúa decided that she would go out with
them to wander the streets for a while and then to a place where sometimes
something interesting was playing. A small commotion was heard at the end of
the street.
-Who can lend me a pen? -Leonardo asked urgently.
The commotion grew like an avalanche of snow, and in the
midst of the human storm, one of Lua's group discovered what motivated
Leonardo's desire. Mariah took out her pen. Leonardo prepared to snatch it from
her, half jokingly, half seriously, salaciously.
-First me, then all yours, -Mariah planted herself
forcefully.
They arrived transformed. Mariah and Leonardo had met none
other than the actor they didn't like at all, but he is famous, they would
later confess. Lúa will soon attend a seminar where she will once again
experience the rage for photography. This time it's different, at least the
philosopher is really admired and that brings her back to the centre of meaning
and to abandon her radicalism. That day, she regrets a little for criticising those
who take photographs and hemself for not daring, a victim of her criticism, to
ask to immortalise the moments. She left happy, however, because the conference
had been magnificent.
Her story with people she knew did not end there, of course.
The year she decided to go on holiday to Montreux to listen to an admired
trumpet player, something happened that he would never have imagined in his
wildest dreams. It happened at the end of the concert. Lúa left early because
she was alone. And there he was. She knew perfectly well what it was like to
leave exhausted after giving a show, so she didn't mug him, but followed his
steps with her eyes as they led him to a signing stand. There was no one in
line. She couldn't believe it. This time she didn't hesitate, she went to meet
him, asked for a signature, thanked him for his music. As she was leaving, a
couple asked her who the trumpet player was.
The Montreux myth came crashing down, but not so low as to
cloud her moment. She sat down on the first bench she could find. She looked at
the record carefully. The quintet was deluxe. She kept listening to the warm
sound of the ballad with that unique and eloquent sound that kept her smiling
for the rest of the day and night. She thought about his face and his reaction.
He was no longer young, not even mature, but after the obvious exhaustion, his
gaze shone like that of a teenager. Few jobs keep enthusiasm alive for so long,
thought Lúa, who thought to herself that perhaps his eyes knew how to give her
back so much energy and account for her ineffable gratitude.
Several winters later Leonardo was no longer in her life.
Nor was Mariah or any other member of that group. If they ever coincided in
networks or casually, just by chance. Lúa doesn't quite know how it happened.
They probably don't either. Teo prepares an infusion for both of them once they
finish bringing up the last box. Well, you're already moved in, he says as he
offers her the cup.
But Lúa knows that the move won't be over until she hangs up
the photos, including the one of the trumpeter, and until she forgets why she
is here now and not there, where and with whom she would like to be. He also
knows that she must read the first book on her sofa to feel at home. She picks
up Deleuze's Rhizome, which is the first book to appear when he removes the
adhesive tape from the box. At home, nomadic and Deleuzian, she says to herself
with a smile that she has to push a little, because her smile still lacks
autonomy. She lies down and rereads some fragments she had underlined in
previous readings.
"Write to n, n-1, write with slogans: Make
rhizome and not root, never plant! Don't sow, dig! Be neither one nor multiple,
be multiplicities! Make the line, not the point! Speed transforms the point into
line! Be fast, even without moving! Line of luck, line of hip, line of flight,
do not raise a General in yourselves! No just ideas, just one idea (Godard).
Have short ideas. Make maps, not pictures or drawings. Be the Pink Panther, and
let your loves be like those of the wasp and the orchid, the cat and the
baboon.
She rises stealthily, imitating the panther, and plays
Mancini's theme as she puts on an apron. Yoda barks as Lua serves his meal. She
thinks she sees The Little Man going after her dog. She grabs her tea towel and
wrestles with him to prevent him from taking her pet. When she releases him,
Yoda begins to nibble rabidly at the cloth. They struggle. When she manages to
calm him down, Yoda kisses her. Then she imagines she might sneak into her new,
unknown neighbours' house for some food and imagines The Little Man chasing her
with a hamo. She rolls her imaginary pink tail to dine on the post-muddle
emergency sandwich. No longer amusing herself, she concludes the game. Now that
she is flesh-coloured again and Yoda has dined she feels the weight of freedom
as a complex ballast.
Deleuze gives her back her perspective, opens up her lines,
invites her to think on a plane that goes beyond the expected. In a way,
reading distances her from reality, which, she knows perfectly well, entails a
real risk of escape, but also the encounter with other gazes and planes of her
being. They have left her full of voids, as if she had emerged unscathed from a
gunfight and, petrified, all the bullets had fallen one by one. But now she can
add: and you yourself have been a sniper of the world. And perhaps even more is
said, that ends the war metaphor, with the semantic field that speaks of shots
and threats. She decorates the holes in herself as she can, a record here, a poem
there, some flowers where she can. She has drawn herself a map, not with
progressions or numbers. A rhizomatic map, one of those that are made by
walking: a conversation here, a nice meeting there, a what-has-to-be, a
what-is-being. On that map there are people she loves, people deeply admires
and some projects to be done, there is a lot to learn, she says. She ordered
the general of reading to stop ruling her, to lift the order to live to be
accepted and to order herself the very acceptance of what she was. Loneliness
sometimes turns on other lights.
That year she didn't get an autograph, but she was given the
gift of a unique moment. That the day has 365 days, her acquaintances will
reproach her days later. But unique days, as experiences to the multiplicity of
life, not so many: on the map, a magnificent star that shines and stops shining
and then shines again, with no other pretension than to be. And thinking that
it is impossible to grasp, embrace or take over even such a little bit of the
universe, she slept like a castaway newly arrived on her planet. Now she was
just a fallen myth for someone. Such is life.
